Project #1: Tall Tales (or
is it tails?): Exaggeration, Conflict and Problem Solving
Students will create an animal character whose physical
characteristics or behavior creates a problem or conflict. Using oil
pastels, students will illustrate a memorable character, an interesting
environment, compelling action and a resolution to their original problem.
The last segment of each day will be spent on describing their
illustrations and telling the story itself with a focus on glamorous and
extravagant language.
Project #2: Poetry
Students learn about different poetry forms and are given poem
"recipes" to create their own poems. Students are asked: Who is
this poem about? What happens in your poem? What are you trying to
say to the reader? What do you want them to feel? How does this poetry
form best tell your story?
Oregon native Nancy Coffelt has been a published writer and illustrator
since 1992. Her titles include Dogs in Space, Good Night Sigmund,
and What's Cookin'?. She lives, writes, and draws
in Portland, Oregon with her husband, son, and two wiener dogs.
