Imarisha, Walidah

by admin

Walidah Imarisha's workshops look at identity, community and voice through the lens of poetry. Using large and small group writing exercises, engaging performances, and a myriad of fun writing exercises, she leads students through generating work, editing and refining it, and sharing it with each other. They will learn how to use the senses to create descriptive writing, and will explore word choice, structure and content.

Walidah Imarisha is a spoken word artists, journalist and organizer. She is the bad half of the poetry duo Good Sista/Bad Sista. She edited the 9/11 anthology Another World is Possible and was the founding editor of the anti war hip hop publication AWOL Magazine. She shot and directed the post-Katrina documentary Finding Common Ground in New Orleans. She has done poetry, journalism, memoir and short story writing workshops in public schools of all grades, private schools, juvenile detention facilities, prisons, community centers, youth organizations and more for 10 years across the country.
