Rosie's Walk

Objective:
A quick mini-lesson to stress the importance of organization and sequence.

Read the book Rosie's Walk by Pat Hutchins. This book stresses giving directions in a very simplified manner.

Have the students draw a picture of a path from their front door to their bedroom. Then give time for students to share their pictures with a partner, explaining in detail the path they would take. The students can then write the path they explained to their partner. The written work should be read out loud at home for an individual to follow. Success of the organization can be measured on how well the listener was able to follow the directions.

Extension: Have the students write in detail how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The next day, with supplies in hand, follow their directions to perfection. Do you end up with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?
