Giving Voice

Teacher preparation:
Preselect a descriptive paragraph, poem or short story.

Start to fnish:

1. Students read the selection to themselves quietly.

2. Students highlight/underline five lines that they liked.

3. Students read their lines aloud. The teacher leads. As the teacher reads his/her highlighted parts, students who have chosen the same lines join in.

4. The end result is a blend of solo and choral voices that give a richer meaning to the words on paper.

TIP: Practicing with smaller group might be a good way to begin this activity.
