Rewrite History

As a class, read a textbook, primary source and commentary (if appropriate) on a given time in history. I use the conquest of Mexico. This would include information on the Legend of Quatzecoatl, Cortes' landing and his journey to Tenochtilan, Aztec religious beliefs, and the fall of Tenochtilan.

Together, the class would generate an outline of this historical period. Discussion would clarify any uncertainties regarding the main historical elements.

Each student would then select (or be assigned) one of the following individuals to retell these facts from that person's point of view: Montezuma, Cortes, Dona Marina, surrounding Native Americans, Aztec people or priests, Spanish soldiers.

Groups of six would be formed upon completion for each voice from the above list to share their version of this portion of history.

Note:  This could be adapted to current events, important moment in a plot, or controversial issues.
