Colors

Students use all five senses to describe colors.

Materials:
White paper, colored pencils or pens (gel pens are fine). Watercolors may be used, but the activity will take two sessions because the paint needs to dry.

Session one: Students paint a rainbow. It could be a traditional arching rainbow or an abstract design using all of the colors in the paint box. Each color band needs to be broad enough to write at least five words or phrases in. Let dry.

Session two:  List the five senses on the overhead or board. Then start with one color, e.g., green, and talk about it. "What does green look like? A cedar tree. What does it sound like? The phone ringing." Together, brainstorm and write one word or phrase for that color under each of the senses. Have students make their own list of words for each color and, using pencil, pen or gel pen, write them in that color on their rainbow. They should try to have at least one idea for each sense in each color and are welcome to have more.
