Newspaper Headlines

Materials needed:
Newspapers, scissors, glue, paper, poster paper, and/or overhead

Procedure:

1.  Review how strong words create visual images. Brainstorm different types of strong words, using poster paper or overhead.

2.  Give students all sections of the newspaper with instructions to cut out at least 50 words from headlines only. Words can be only strong words (no prepositions or articles;  just nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs). Using the "two heads together" method, have the students check the cut-out words to make sure they meet the definition of strong words.

3.  Have students use the words they found to form an image poem that they then glue to paper.

4.  Have the students share their poems with five other people in the room, or hold a "poem reading" in the class.
