Nouns and Adjectives

Goals:

• To increase awareness of nouns and adjectives
• To add descriptive adjectives to gain meaning
• To gain an understanding of a country's culture
• To imagine yourself as a character living in a country and be able to write about what a day in your life would be like

Copies of an article describing life in (fill in the blank with one of the countries we study such as Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Haiti) will be distributed to each student. The teacher will read the writing to the class. After teacher demonstration, the students will highlight the nouns. Then students will go back and highlight adjectives. Students can then offer more descriptive adjectives to tell about the nouns. This could be done on butcher paper with markers, or perhaps on the overhead projector. Discussion should take place regarding descriptive adjectives and their role in modifying and clarifying meaning with persons, places, or things.

I like my students to create a character through a drawing they make, then place themselves in the character's country, assume the role of the character, and write about their lives.
