Self-Description

Objective: To begin a list of a descriptive words that can be referred to during writing activities.

A great groundbreaking writing activity that can be used during one of the first days of school. The students should write their first name vertically, along the left side of a sheet of paper, one letter every couple of lines. Give the students time to think of descriptive words to describe themselves that begin with each letter of their name. For example, ANNE:

A – Analytical

N - Neatnik

N - Natural

E - Energetic

I always encourage them to think of as many words as they possibly can. During the shared writing time, other students can give suggestions of words that can be added to their list. Student choose words that they would like to add to their Word Choice Book, which is their personal reference collection for the rest of the year.

Extension: Students can make a final copy and draw a self-portrait.
